Framework 01

Purpose Before Structure

Do not begin by asking what the organization should look like. Begin by asking what it must make possible.

The idea

Structure is an answer. Purpose is the question it should answer.

Organizations often inherit roles, committees, programs, and reporting lines, then treat them as fixed. Purpose Before Structure reverses the sequence.

  1. What outcome exists beyond the organization itself?
  2. What responsibilities must be held consistently?
  3. What relationships must the structure enable?
  4. What is the lightest form capable of carrying that work?

The framework is useful during organizational design, governance review, collaboration, and transition.

Emergence

Observed in practice.
