Stewardship vs Leadership
Not every shared system needs someone in charge. Some need people willing to hold responsibility together.
The distinction
Leadership directs an organization. Stewardship cares for something no one organization owns.
In multi-organization systems, central leadership can unintentionally turn collaboration into control. Stewardship offers another form: relational, accountable, time-bounded, and oriented toward the health of the whole.
- What is genuinely shared?
- Who is affected but not represented?
- What decisions require authority—and what work requires care?
